Hi there!
I made slightly updated version of this conky: dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/48…
The difference is basically that this conky will also change the number of dots in accordance to the number of open workspaces.The code is also a lot cleaner.I set it to use only dots.It works with 16 workspaces, but itīs easy to add as many as you wish!
Thought you might wanna add in! :)

I know this is two years old. But I downloaded this conky theme and like a couple people above was quite disappointed when it didn't work with compiz. After googling I came across this ubuntuforums.org/showthread.ph….

Based off of my understanding of that thread:

metacity uses 1,2,3,4 names for desktop workspaces. Compiz uses the workspaces differently. Instead of say 4 different workspaces, compiz has one big space. When you choose workspace 2 for example, the viewport is moved to the pixel x and y coordinates for workspace 2. Which keep in mind will be different for everyone using different resolutions.

Here is how I fixed mine.
Open the script and find if_match ${desktop}==1. We need to change the desktop}==1 (because if your using compiz the script will never be told that "desktop" is equal to 1).

Goto workspace 1, open terminal and enter
wmctrl -d | awk '{print $6}' | sed 's/0,//'
It should spit out "0". Because workspace 1's top left coordinate x is 0, and y is 0.
Write that number somewhere. Now do this for every workspace. ie. goto workspace bottom-left, open new terminal, enter
wmctrl -d | awk '{print $6}' | sed 's/0,//'

Once you have all four of your numbers we are gonna edit the script.

FIND
desktop}==1
CHANGE TO
exec wmctrl -d | awk '{print $6}' | sed 's/0,//'} == 0

FIND
desktop}==2
CHANGE TO
exec wmctrl -d | awk '{print $6}' | sed 's/0,//'} == THE SECOND NUMBER YOU WROTE DOWN

FIND
desktop}==3
CHANGE TO
exec wmctrl -d | awk '{print $6}' | sed 's/0,//'} == THE THIRD NUMBER YOU WROTE DOWN

FIND
desktop}==3
CHANGE TO
exec wmctrl -d | awk '{print $6}' | sed 's/0,//'} == THE FORTH NUMBER YOU WROTE DOWN

goodluck!

I really love this - thankyou! But, I am having the same problem. When I change workspaces, the 1st bullet is still highlighted. I am using compiz.
Is there a fix for this? Or any advice / links would be really appreciated!

Or have I missed something really basic?

It must work with any WM that respects FreeDesktop standards.

this is probably the best looking workspace indicator I've seen. I usually end up deleting them from whatever panels my WM uses if they're there by default because they're always ugly or take up a lot of space, but this addresses both problems. Haven't run conky in a while, but I may have to give this a shot
